Recognition and awards received in 2013

Ms Ying Zheng (PhD student in Oral Diagnosis and Polyclinics) won the Best Poster Sunstar Award at the 10th Asian Pacific Society of Periodontology Meeting in Nara, Japan, on 3-4 September 2013, for her research project titled “Genetic polymorphisms of Th2 cell regulatory and effector molecules in non-smokers with or without periodontitis”, which was co-authored by Dr Lei Chai (School of Dentistry, The University of Queensland), Dr You-qiang Song (HKU Department of Biochemistry), and Prof W Keung Leung (HKU Faculty of Dentistry). Her principal PhD supervisor is Prof W Keung Leung and her co-supervisors are Dr You-qiang Song and Prof Lijian Jin.

Dr Crystal TY Lee (BDS 2013) received the second runner-up prize in the best poster award contest during HKIDEAS 2013 (Hong Kong International Dental Expo And Symposium), which was held at the HK Convention and Exhibition Centre from 9 to 11 August 2013. Her poster of a research project done while a BDS student was titled "Profile and surgical management of dentofacial deformities in Hong Kong and Glasgow". Her project supervisor was Prof Lim-kwong Cheung (HKU; pictured R); her co-supervisors were Prof Ashraf Ayoub and Dr Philip Bennington (University of Glasgow) and Dr Balvinder Khambay (HKU).

Dr Paul WK Tsang (Research Assistant Professor in Oral Biosciences) and his co-authors of the research paper "Purpurin suppresses Candida albicans biofilm formation and hyphal development. PLOS ONE, 2012, Vol. 7, No. 11, e50866, by Paul Wai-Kei Tsang, HMHN Bandara, Wing-Ping Fong" have won the HKU Faculty of Dentistry Research Output Prize 2012-13. Dr Chun-hung Chu (Clinical Associate Professor in Community and Family Dentistry) and team members Dr Xiaoli Gao, Prof Edward CM Lo, and Prof Cynthia KY Yiu, were awarded a grant of HK$70,000 from the HKU Knowledge Exchange (KE) Fund 2013-14 for their Impact Project "Empowering kindergarten teachers and parents to deliver oral health education to young children". The external KE Partners are the Po Leung Kuk, Tung Wah Group of Hospitals, and Colgate Palmolive (Hong Kong) Limited.

Dr Christie YK Lung (Postdoctoral Fellow in Dental Materials Science; supervisor, Dr Jukka Matinlinna), received the first runner-up prize in the best poster award contest during HKIDEAS 2013 (Hong Kong International Dental Expo And Symposium), which was held at the HK Convention and Exhibition Centre from 9 to 11 August 2013. His research poster was titled "Surface modification of titanium by a polysiloxane coating on resin titanium bonding"; his co-authors were Dr Dan Liu, Dr James KH Tsoi, and Dr Jukka Matinlinna.

Prof Lakshman Samaranayake (HKU Dean of Dentistry, Chair Professor of Oral Microbiology, and Tam Wah-Ching Professor in Dental Science) and Prof Edward CM Lo (Clinical Professor in Dental Public Health) received International Association for Dental Research, South-East Asian Division (IADR-SEA) Distinguished Service Awards during the Welcome Reception Party of the 2nd IADR-Asia Pacific Region meeting, on 21 August 2013, in the Crystal Hall, Plaza Athenee Hotel, Bangkok, Thailand.

The following eight Faculty staff have been awarded a total of HK$5,959,741 in research grants from the HKSAR Research Grants Council's General Research Fund 2013-14:

Dr Mike YY Leung (Clinical Assistant Professor in Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery) and Dr Otto LT Lam (Clinical Assistant Professor in Oral Rehabilitation) have been awarded Early Career Scheme project grants 2013-14 from the HKSAR Research Grants Council, totalling HK$1,336,000.

Ms Cordelia KP Chan (Tutor in Dental Hygiene), Prof Gary SP Cheung (Clinical Professor in Endodontics), Prof Edward CM Lo (Clinical Professor in Dental Public Health), and Dr Henry WK Luk (Tutor in Dental Technology) were presented with Long Service Awards by the Vice-Chancellor, at the 2013 Long Service Awards Presentation Ceremony for Terms of Service I Staff on 11 June 2013, for 25 years or more of loyal service to HKU.

Ms Sarah SW Wong (PhD student in Oral Biosciences; supervisors, Prof LP Samaranayake and Dr CJ Seneviratne, now at the National University of Singapore, Singapore) has won the Online People’s Choice Award in the 2013 HKU 3-Minute Thesis Competition; her video "Discovery of a 'Magic Bullet' for a Deadly Fungus" can be viewed on YouTube at http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=TfB6oHiz1Gg.

Dr Chun-hung Chu (Clinical Associate Professor in Community and Family Dentistry), as project supervisor, was awarded a grant of HK$19,500 from the HKU SERVICE 100 Fund to conduct the extracurricular service project "Oral health promotion in Yunnan, China" this summer. The other team members are project coordinator Dr Shinan Zhang (3rd year Faculty PhD student in Oral Diagnosis and Polyclinics); core team members Ms Carolle KP Mok (BDSI), Ms Si-ling Pang (BDSI), Ms Phoebe PY Lam (BDSII), Ms Jessica KK Leung (BDSII), Dr Ying Cao (2nd year Faculty PhD student in Oral Diagnosis and Polyclinics), Dr Chenghui Jiang (3rd year Faculty of Education PhD student in Speech and Hearing Sciences); and project assistants Dr Lei Mei (Research Assistant) and Ms Rita PC Suen (Research Assistant).

Dr Ricky WK Wong (Clinical Associate Professor in Orthodontics) and Dr Yanqi Yang (Clinical Assistant Professor in Orthodontics) have been awarded the Fellowship in Dental Surgery without Examination by The Royal College of Surgeons of Edinburgh.

Dr Yanqi Yang (Clinical Assistant Professor in Orthodontics) and her Knowledge Exchange (KE) team members (Dr Chun-hung Chu and BDS students Kwan-ning Ma, Stephanie YT So, Yau-sing Wong, Pui-chung Lee, Chao Zhong, Janet Chan, Tiffany CL Chan, Tsz-yan Li, Kenneth CK Wong, Kenneth KC Chow, and Kenneth KH Yung) have won the Faculty KE Award 2013 for their project "Improving children's oral health and development by terminating poor oral habits and promoting healthy ones".

Dr Hamdi HH Hamama (PhD student in Paediatric Dentistry and Orthodontics in the field of Aesthetic Dentistry; supervisors, Prof Cynthia KY Yiu and Dr Michael Burrow) won an Individual Award (Pan Asia Pacific) on 20 April 2013, at the 16th HKU Prize Presentation Ceremony for student winners of external competitions in 2012. He was recognised for his research success at the 26th Annual Scientific Meeting of the International Association for Dental Research South-East Asia Division (IADR-SEA), Hong Kong, 2012, where he won the IADR-SEA Best Paper Award in Cariology Research/Mineralized Tissue Research for an oral presentation titled "Effect of enzymatic-based chemomechanical caries removal on dentine bonding".

Dr D Jeevanie Epasinghe (PhD student in Paediatric Dentistry) won an IADR/Colgate Research in Prevention Travel Award to attend the 91st General Session of the International Association for Dental Research (IADR) in Seattle, Washington, USA, on 20-23 March 2013, for her paper titled "Synergistic effects of proanthocyanidin and CPP-ACFP on remineralization of root caries". Her supervisors are Dr Cynthia KY Yiu (Clinical Professor in Paediatric Dentistry) and Dr Michael Burrow (Clinical Associate Professor in Operative Dentistry).

Dr Aneesha Acharya (MPhil student in Implant Dentistry) won the IADR Young Investigator Implantology Research Group Award at the 91st General Session of the International Association for Dental Research (IADR) in Seattle, Washington, USA, on 20-23 March 2013, for her oral presentation titled "Periodontal bone loss, sinus pathology predict posterior maxillary ridge height", which was co-authored with Dr Jia Hao, Dr Anson Chau, Dr Nikos Mattheos, and Prof Niklaus Lang (all from HKU at the time of the project), and Dr Prashant Shirke (InSight CBCT Center, Mumbai, India). Her supervisor is Dr Nikos Mattheos (Clinical Associate Professor in Implant Dentistry).

Mr Chow-ming Lo, Laboratory Assistant in the Education and Media Technology Unit, received an HKU Long Service Award from Vice-Chancellor Prof Lap-chee Tsui at an awards ceremony on 19 February 2013, for 40 years of service to HKU.

Prof Lakshman Samaranayake, HKU Dean of Dentistry, has been elected as a Fellow of the Royal Australasian College of Dental Surgeons, without examination, in the General Stream. The proposal for election as a Fellow without having to sit the entry examination was made in recognition of Prof Samaranayake's "outstanding contribution to dentistry".

Dr Rory Watt (Assistant Professor in Oral Biosciences) and his co-authors of the research paper "Structural and functional insight into the mechanism of an alkaline exonuclease from Laribacter hongkongensis, Nucleic Acids Research, 2011, Vol. 39, No. 22, pp. 9803-9819, by Wen Yang, Wen-yang Chen, Hui Wang, John WS Ho, Jian-Dong Huang, Patrick CY Woo, Susanna KP Lau, Kwok-Yung Yuen, Qionglin Zhang, Weihong Zhou, Mark Bartlam, Rory M Watt, and Zihe Rao" have won the HKU Faculty of Dentistry Research Output Prize 2011-12. Dr Susan Bridges (Leader), Prof Cynthia KY Yiu, Dr Michael Botelho, Prof Edward CM Lo, Dr Peter CS Tsang, Dr Rory Watt, Dr Yanqi Yang, and Miss Jessica W Wong have won a team award as an Outstanding Teaching Award of the HKU Teaching Excellence Award Scheme for 2012,  for "PBL 2.0: E-learning for problem-based learning (PBL) at the Faculty of Dentistry".

Dr Liwu Zheng (Clinical Assistant Professor in Oral Medicine) has been awarded a research grant of CHF 51,800 from the Osteology Research Fund, Switzerland, to conduct the project "Effect of G-CSF on enhancing neovascularization and osteogenesis in aged osteoporotic bone", with co-investigators Prof NP Lang (former Clinical Professor in Implant Dentistry), Dr XL Liu (PhD student), and Dr NJ Rao (PhD student).

Recognition and awards received in 2012

A group of BDS students from the HKU Faculty of Dentistry (Crystal Tsz Ying Lee (leader), Bonnie Hiu Tung Ling, Joanne Man Ki Wong, Clive Pok Sem Lee, Nicholas Yik Tao Tsang, Howard Kumoi Mineaki Fung Hou Sum, Christina Tam and Chao Zhong), mentored by Prof Colman McGrath (Clinical Professor in Dental Public Health), produced one of the two winning videos of the Universitas 21 (U21) United Nations Millennium Development Goals (UNMDG) Student Video Competition 2012. The group presented their winning video (archived on the Faculty YouTube channel at http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ARd2Qb--StA) during the UNMDG workshop on Tuesday, 4 September 2012, as part of the U21 Health Sciences Annual Meeting, Auckland, New Zealand.

Prof W Keung Leung (Clinical Professor in Periodontology) and Prof Niklaus Lang (former Clinical Professor in Implant Dentistry) were among HKU members included in the world's top 1% of scholars as listed by the ISI's Essential Science Indicators for 2012. Dr Li-wu Zheng (Clinical Assistant Professor in Oral Medicine) has been appointed to the following external posts for the next 3 years: (1) Adjunct Assistant Professor of Oral Medicine, School of Dental Medicine, University of Pennsylvania, USA; (2) Guest Professor, School of Medicine, Zhengzhou University, China; (3) Member of the National Speciality Committee on Oral Medicine, Chinese Stomatological Association, China; and (4) Member of the Regional Speciality Committee on Oral Medicine, Guangdong Stomatological Association, China.

The following staff and students won research prizes at the 23rd Annual Meeting of the South-East Asia Association for Dental Education (SEAADE) in conjunction with the 26th Annual Scientific Meeting of the International Association for Dental Research South-East Asia Division (IADR-SEA), held in Hong Kong, 31 October - 4 November 2012:

  • Dr Hamdi HH Hamama (PhD student in Paediatric Dentistry and Orthodontics in the field of Aesthetic Dentistry; supervisors, Prof Cynthia KY Yiu and Dr Michael Burrow) won the IADR-SEA Best Paper Award in Cariology Research/Mineralized Tissue Research for an oral presentation titled "Effect of enzymatic-based chemomechanical caries removal on dentine bonding".
  • Dr Rory Watt (Assistant Professor in Oral Biosciences) won the IADR-SEA Best Paper Award in Microbiology / Immunology / Periodontal Research for an oral presentation titled "Oral treponeme phylotypes associated with periodontal health and disease", co-authored with Prof WK Leung, Dr M You, and Dr S Mo.
  • Dr Anne Wing-yan Chung (MSc in Community Dentistry 2012; former project supervisor, Dr May CM Wong; former project collaborator, Prof Edward CM Lo) won the IADR-SEA Best Paper Award, in Behavioral, Epidemiologic and Health Services Research for an oral presentation titled "Measuring oral health-related quality of life using the Oral Health Impact Profile (OHIP-14): Face-to-face versus telephone interviews".
  • Dr Tracy Hua-jing Li (PhD student in Periodontology; supervisor, Prof Lijian Jin; co-supervisors, Prof Cun-yu Wang, University of California, Los Angeles, USA, and Dr C Jayampath Seneviratne, now at the National University of Singapore, Singapore) won the IADR/Unilever Hatton Divisional Award, Senior Category, Southeast Asia Division. Her research project entry was titled "Commensals and periodontopathogens modulate immuno-inflammatory trajectories in HOKs and THP-1".
  • Ms Sarah Sze-wah Wong (PhD student in Oral Biosciences; supervisors, Prof Lakshman Samaranayake and Dr C Jayampath Seneviratne, now at the National University of Singapore, Singapore) won the runner-up place for the IADR/Unilever Hatton Divisional Award, Senior Category, Southeast Asia Division. Her research project entry was titled "Discovery of new antifungal for denture stomatitis and oral candidiasis".
  • Dr Gloria HM Wong (Clinical Assistant Professor in Paediatric Dentistry) won the SEEADE Best Poster Presentation Award for her research poster titled "Changes in first-year dental students’ readiness for self-directed learning in a problem-based learning curriculum", co-authored with Dr Yan-qi Yang.
  • Ms Brenda SS Cheng (PhD student; supervisors, Dr Susan Bridges, Prof Cynthia KY Yiu, and Prof Colman McGrath) won the SEEADE Best Oral Presentation Award for her research presetnation titled "Evidence-based dental education: a case study in clinical communication".

Miss Janet SM Chan (Project Leader, BDS IV), team members Miss Tiffany CL Chan (BDS IV), Miss Tsz Yan Li (BDSIV), Mr Kenneth CK Wong (BDSIV), Mr Kenneth KC Chow (BDSIV), Mr Kenneth KH Yung (BDSIV), Faculty Mentor Dr Yanqi Yang (Clinical Assistant Professor in Orthodontics), and KE Partner Eugene Group have been awarded HK$15,000 by the HKU KE Fund to conduct the student KE project 2012/13 "Becoming 'babywise': oral health knowledge education among parents of infants".

Dr Philip Newsome (Clinical Associate Professor) has been awarded a Fellowship Ad Eundem by the Faculty of General Dental Practice (UK) of The Royal College of Surgeons of England, to recognise the contribution he has made to the dental profession. He has been invited to accept the award at the Annual FGDP(UK) Diplomates Ceremony on 23 February 2013.

Dr May CM Wong (Associate Professor in Dental Public Health) has been nominated as the winner of the Faculty Outstanding Teacher Award 2011, and will receive the prize at the HKU Faculty of Dentistry Graduation & Awards Ceremony on 5 December 2012.

Dr Chun-hung Chu (Clinical Associate Professor in Community and Family Dentistry) has been awarded HK$1.25 million by the Mr and Mrs Steven Lo Donation Fund to deliver oral health education in kindergartens in Hong Kong from 2012 to 2014.

Dr Chengfei Zhang (Clinical Associate Professor in Endodontics) has been awarded a grant of HK$765,000 from the Research Fund for the Control of Infectious Disease (RFCID), Food and Health Bureau, HKSAR Government, to conduct the research project "Lipoteichoic acid (LTA) of pathogenic Enterococcus faecalis modulates the functional characteristics of osteoblasts and osteoclasts". His co-investigators are Dr CJ Seneviratne, Prof LJ Jin, and Dr RM Watt at the HKU Faculty of Dentistry, and Dr X Li at the HKU Department of Chemistry.

Dr Peter CS Tsang (Clinical Assistant Professor in Oral Rehabilitation) has been awarded a grant of HK$78,000 from the Research Fund for the Control of Infectious Disease (RFCID), Food and Health Bureau, HKSAR Government, to conduct the research project "Anti-infective therapy of Er,Cr:YSGG laser on contaminated zirconia implant surfaces". His co-investigators are Dr Paul WK Tsang and Dr Edmond HN Pow.

Dr Yong Chen (PhD student in Orthodontics) was awarded a study grant under the special Ministry of Education fund set up by the Central Government for 1000 HKU staff and students to organise academic visits to the mainland, as announced by the Vice-Premier of the State Council, Mr Keqiang Li, during his HKU Centenary visit in August 2011. Dr Chen used the grant to spend October 2012 conducting orthodontics research at the State Key Laboratory of Oral Diseases at the West China College of Stomatology, Sichuan University, under Prof Zhihe Zhao, President of the Chinese Orthodontic Society. Dr Chen’s PhD supervisors at the HKU Faculty of Dentistry are Dr Ricky WK Wong, Prof Urban Hägg, and Prof Colman McGrath.

Dr Paul WK Tsang (Research Assistant Professor in Oral Biosciences) has been awarded a grant of HK$743,520 from the Research Fund for the Control of Infectious Disease (RFCID), Food and Health Bureau, HKSAR Government, to conduct the 2-year research project "Perturbation of pH homeostasis: a comparative study on the inhibitory effect of purpurin on membrane-bound ATPases in Candida albicans". His co-investigators are Prof Lakshman Samaranayake (HKU Chair Professor of Oral Microbiology) and Prof Wing-ping Fong (School of Life Sciences, The Chinese University of Hong Kong).

Dr Ricky WK Wong (Clinical Associate Professor in Orthodontics) was appointed as a member of the Editorial Board of the World Journal of Orthopedics in October 2012 (publisher website, http://www.wjgnet.com/2218-5836/about.htm).

Dr Susan Bridges (Assistant Professor in Dental Education and E-Learning) and Dr Michael Botelho (Clinical Associate Professor in Oral Rehabilitation), together with Dr Gayle Morris (Associate Professor and Director of Academic Programmes, HKU Centre for the Enhancement of Teaching & Learning) have been jointly awarded HK$50,000 under the HKU Teaching Exchange Fellowship Scheme to invite an overseas expert in standards-based assessment (Prof Claire Wyatt-Smith, Dean (Academic) and Professor at the Faculty of Education, Griffith University, Australia) to visit Hong Kong in 2012/13.

Dr C Jayampath Seneviratne (Research Assistant Professor in Oral Biosciences) has been awarded a total of HK$2.06 million from the Research Fund for the Control of Infectious Disease (RFCID), Food and Health Bureau, HKSAR Government, to conduct four research projects on the fungus Candida. His co-investigators are Prof Lakshman Samaranayake, Dr Yu Wang, Dr Richard Kao, Prof CM Che, and Dr Dominic Tsang in Hong Kong, as well as Dr Juan Vizcaino in the UK and Dr Hiroshi Egusa, Dr Tomoko Ohshima, and Prof Nobuko Maeda in Japan.

Dr Ricky WK Wong (Clinical Associate Professor in Orthodontics) has been awarded HK$81,000 from the HKU Knowledge Exchange Fund to conduct the Impact Project "Oral health education kit for orthodontic patients", with Dr Yan-qi Yang (Clinical Assistant Professor in Orthodontics) and Dr Alex TH Tang (Clinical Assistant Professor in Orthodontics).

Dr Bao-ying Liu (Postdoctoral Fellow in Public Health and Healthy Ageing) won both the FDI Poster Award in the theme of Preventive Dentistry and the FDI Poster Award for overall best research poster, at the 2012 FDI Annual World Dental Congress, Hong Kong (29 August - 1 September 2012). The co-authors of the research poster, titled "Sealant and topical fluoride in fissure caries prevention – 3-year results" were Prof Edward CM Lo (HKU) Dr Chun-hung Chu (HKU), and Prof CH Lin (Sun Yat-sen University, China)

Dr Ying Cao (first-year PhD student in Oral Diagnosis and Polyclinics; supervisors: Dr Chun-hung Chu and Prof Edward CM Lo) won the FDI Poster Award in the theme of Dental Treatment and Restorative Dentistry, at the 2012 FDI Annual World Dental Congress, Hong Kong (29 August - 1 September 2012). The co-authors of the research poster, titled "Intrafibrillar apatite formation on phosphorylated dentine collagen by CPP-ACP" were Dr QL Li (Anhui Medical University, China), Prof Edward CM Lo (HKU), and Dr Chun-hung Chu (HKU).

Dr Chun-hung Chu (Clinical Associate Professor in Community and Family Dentistry) has been awarded a "Bright Smiles, Bright Futures" Dental Health Education Grant of HKD 220,000 from Colgate, to train kindergarten teachers in Hong Kong for 2 years to deliver oral health education.

Dr Chun-hung Chu (Clinical Associate Professor in Community and Family Dentistry) has been awarded an "Extra Teeth Loving Day Action Grant" of HKD 150,000 by The Wrigley Co (HK) Ltd to promote oral health among children in 10 primary schools in Hong Kong.

Prof Lim K Cheung (Chair Professor of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery), as principal investigator, has been awarded an SK Yee Medical Foundation Grant for HK$2.13 million to conduct the research project "Implant-supported facial prosthesis for the treatment of craniofacial defects". The project co-investigators are Prof Samuel Ho, Prof Colman McGrath, Dr Edmond HN Pow, Dr Siu-chung Fung, Dr Henry WK Luk, Dr John Lo, and Dr Stephen Tam.

Prof Edward CM Lo (Clinical Professor in Dental Public Health) and project team members Prof Li-jian Jin, Prof Lakshman Samaranayake, Dr Jayampath Seneviratne, Dr Xiao-li Gao, and Dr Susan Bridges have won the HKU Faculty of Dentistry Knowledge Exchange (KE) Award 2012 for their HKU KE Impact Project titled "Enhancing student learning of biological sciences through capacity building of secondary school science teachers".

Dr Ricky WK Wong (Clinical Associate Professor in Orthodontics) was appointed as a member of the Editorial Board of the World Journal of Stomatology in July 2012.

Prof Edward CM Lo (Clinical Professor in Dental Public Health) has been appointed as Treasurer of the International Association for Dental Research for the period 2012 to 2015.

The following staff and students won research awards on 20-23 June 2012 in Iguacu Falls, Brazil, at the 90th General Session of the International Association for Dental Research (IADR):

  • Prof Edward CM Lo (Clinical Professor in Dental Public Health) received the IADR Colgate Community-Based Research Award for Caries Prevention to perform the research project titled "Randomized clinical trial on preventing and arresting root surface caries using silver diamine fluoride solution in older adults living in fluoridated and non-fluoridated areas". His project co-workers are Dr Chun-hung Chu and Prof HC Lin (Sun Yat-sen University, Guangzhou, China).
  • Dr Pei-hui Ding (PhD student) received an IADR/Colgate Research in Prevention Travel Award for her project titled "rhLBP and P gingivalis LPS crosstalk in modulating cytokine expression". Her supervisors are Prof Li-jian Jin and Prof Cun-yu Wang (UCLA School of Dentistry, Los Angeles, CA, USA).
  • Dr Waruna Lakmal Dissanayaka (PhD student) received an IADR/Colgate Research in Prevention Travel Award for his project titled "Synergistic actions of DPSCs and ECs in vascularizing bioengineered pulp". His supervisors are Dr Cheng-fei Zhang and Prof Li-jian Jin.

Dr Philip Newsome (Clinical Associate Professor) was presented with an HKU Long Service Award by the Vice-Chancellor at the Long Service Awards Presentation Ceremony for Terms of Service I staff on 6 June 2012. Dr Newsome received the award for 25 years of service to HKU.

Dr Divya Parthasarathy Srinivasan (PhD student in Comprehensive Dental Care) has won a full scholarship to attend this year's United Nations Millennium Development Goal (MDG) Summer School Program, themed Achieving MDGs for Global Health, at Fudan University, Shanghai, China, 8-20 July 2012. Dr Parthasarathy Srinivasan will present a case report on adolescent reproductive health at the summer school. Her PhD research project is titled "Oral health literacy: implications for Hong Kong children" (supervisor, Dr Susan Bridges; co-supervisors, Prof Colman McGrath and Dr Gloria HM Wong).

Dr Tazuko K Goto (Clinical Associate Professor in Oral Radiology) has been named winner of the Academic Award (Research Paper) 2012 by the Japanese Society for Oral and Maxillofacial Radiology, for publishing the journal article "Okamura K, Yoshiura K, Tatsumi M, Kawazu T, Chikui T, Shimizu M, Goto TK. A new method for evaluating perceptible contrast information in digital intraoral radiographic systems. Dr Goto has also won the Outstanding Research Award 2012 from the Alumni-Fellow Association of the Department of Oral and Maxillofacial Radiology, Kyushu University, Japan.

Dr Chun-hung Chu (Clinical Associate Professor in Community and Family Dentistry) has been appointed as a Visiting Professor at the Kunming Medical University, China, for the period April 2012 to April 2015.

Dr Michael Burrow (Clinical Associate Professor in Operative Dentistry) has been appointed as an Honorary Professorial Fellow at the Melbourne Dental School, Faculty of Medicine, Dentistry and Health Sciences, The University of Melbourne, Australia.

Dr Jukka Matinlinna (Associate Professor in Dental Materials Science) has been appointed as a Visiting Professor at the Faculty of Dentistry, Universitas Gadjah Mada, Yogyakarta, Indonesia, as well as a Visiting Professor of the Biomaterials Research Chair of the College of Applied Medical Sciences, King Saud University, Riyadh, Saudi-Arabia.

Dr Xiao-li Gao (Research Assistant Professor in Dental Public Health) has been awarded a non-research grant of HK$255,000 from the Health Care and Promotion Fund of the Food and Health Bureau of the HKSAR Government, for the knowledge exchange project "Oral health promotion for and through Indonesian domestic helpers in Hong Kong". The other project team members are Professor Edward CM Lo (Clinical Professor in Dental Public Health), Professor Colman McGrath (Clinical Professor in Dental Public Health), and Professor Lakshman Samaranayake (Chair Professor of Oral Microbiology).

Dr Ricky WK Wong (Clinical Associate Professor in Orthodontics) was admitted to Fellowship in the International College of Dentists (ICD) on 3 March 2012. His fellowship will be formalised at a future ICD initiation ceremony for Hong Kong and Macau.

Prof Colman McGrath (Clinical Professor in Dental Public Health) has been awarded a research grant by Philips Sonicare to conduct a telephone poll of adult Hong Kong residents about their oral health and hygiene. His co-investigator is Dr Xiao-li Gao (Research Assistant Professor in Dental Public Health).

Dr Prajakta Mahindre (former Adv Dip [Endo] student) and Prof Gary SP Cheung (Clinical Professor in Endodontics) have been awarded The Best Original Article Award 2011 by the Hong Kong Dental Journal and the Hong Kong Dental Association for their research article: Mahindre PP, Cheung GSP. Recognition and awards received in 2011

Dr Aneesha Acharya (International Team for Implantology Scholar; supervisor, Prof Niklaus Lang) was second runner-up in the FameLab Hong Kong 2011 contest run by the British Council ( http://www.britishcouncil.org/hongkong-creativity-and-society-science-famelab-news.htm ). In her 3-minute science presentation aimed at the public, she talked about the potential of using children's milk teeth as a source of stem cells to treat diseases like leukaemia.

Dr Paul WK Tsang (Research Assistant Professor in Oral Biosciences) has been awarded a full grant of HK$704,448 from the Research Fund for the Control of Infectious Diseases (RFCID), Food and Health Bureau, HKSAR Government, to conduct the 2-year project "Investigation of the functional significance of phytase activity in Candida albicans: gene disruption, pH regulation, and virulence". He has also been awarded an RFCID Mini Grant of HK$80,000 to conduct the 1-year project "From vital to lethal: functional analysis of apoptosis-inducing factor in the human fungal pathogen Candida albicans".

Dr Chun-hung Chu (Clinical Associate Professor) was appointed as a Visiting Professor at the School of Stomatology of Anhui Medical University, Anhui, China, on 15 December 2011.

Professor Lakshman Samaranayake (Dean, Chair Professor of Oral Microbiology, and Tam Wah-Ching Professor in Dental Science) has been appointed to a King James IV Professorship by the Royal College of Surgeons of Edinburgh, UK. The professorship is awarded by open competition to surgeons or dental surgeons who have made a significant contribution to the clinical or scientific basis of surgery.

Dr C Jayampath Seneviratne (Research Assistant Professor in Oral Biosciences), Dr Yu Wang, Prof Li-jian Jin (Clinical Professor in Periodontology), and Prof Lakshman Samaranayake (Chair Professor of Oral Microbiology) have won the HKU Faculty of Dentistry Research Output Prize 2010-11. Their winning research output was the article "Seneviratne CJ, Wang Y, Jin L, Abiko Y, Samaranayake LP. Proteomics of drug resistance in Candida glabrata biofilms", Proteomics 2010;10(7):1444-1454. Dr Yan-qi Yang (Clinical Assistant Professor in Orthodontics) has been awarded a non-research grant of HK$300,000 from the Health Care and Promotion Fund of the Food and Health Bureau of the HKSAR Government, for the knowledge exchange project "Terminating poor oral habits of preschool-aged children".   • Miss Meng Zhang (PhD student in Dental Materials Science) won the Award for the Best Poster Presentation (Junior Category) for her project titled "Effects of resin matrix composition on flexural properties of e-glass fiber reinforced composites". Professor Niklaus Lang (Professor in Implant Dentistry) was named one of the "HKU Scholars in the Top 1%" of the world's researchers in October 2011 by HKU, based on Essential Science Indicators, which uses research publication indicators compiled by the ISI Web of Knowledge.

Ms Thanuja DK Herath (PhD student in Periodontology) won the Outstanding Poster Presentation Award for her project "Systems biology unravels a novel pathogenic mechanism of heterogeneous Pg LPS lipid A structures in chronic periodontitis" at the 4th Hiroshima Conference on Education and Science in Dentistry, Japan, October 2011. Her supervisors are Professor Li-jian Jin (Clinical Professor in Periodontology) and Dr Y Wang (HKU Li Ka Shing Faculty of Medicine), and her research collaborators are Dr CJ Seneviratne (Research Assistant Professor in Oral Biosciences), Professor R Darveau (University of Washington, Seattle, USA), and Professor CY Wang (UCLA School of Dentistry, Los Angeles, USA).

Dr Li-wu Zheng (Clinical Assistant Professor in Oral Medicine) was appointed to the Editorial Board of the Annals of Plastic Surgery, for the "Research" section of the journal, in August 2011.

Professor Nabil Samman (Professor in Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery) has been appointed as Editor-in-Chief of the International Journal of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery, one of the world's leading peer-reviewed journals in oral and maxillofacial Surgery. His editorship starts in 2012.

Dr Yong Chen (PhD student in Orthodontics) received a Travel Award from the Consortium for Globalization of Chinese Medicine (CGCM) to attend the 10th CGCM Meeting, Shanghai, China, 26-28 August 2011, to make a poster presentation titled "The antimicrobial effect of a traditional Chinese medicine mouthwash on patients undergoing orthodontic treatment with fixed appliance". His co-authors were Dr Ricky WK Wong (primary supervisor), Professor Urban Hagg and Professor Colman McGrath (co-supervisors), Dr C Jayampath Seneviratne, and Professor Lakshman Samaranayake.

(Associate Professor in Family Dentistry) has received a research grant of HKD 838,392 from the Health and Health Services Research Fund of the Food and Health Bureau of the HKSAR Government, for a project titled "Effectiveness of silver diamine fluoride in arresting dental caries in preschool children: a randomized clinical trial with different periodicity and concentration".

Dr Chun-hung Chu (Associate Professor in Family Dentistry) has been admitted as a Fellow of the Royal Australasian College of Dental Surgeons in the Special Field of Dental Public Health (FRACDS(DPH)), as one of only three such inaugural fellows in this new specialty stream.

Dr Chun-hung Chu (Associate Professor in Family Dentistry) and team members Professor Edward CM Lo, Dr Xiao-li Gao, Dr Alex MH Chau, Dr Ivy D Wu, Dr Emily M Jiang, and Dr Marcus HT Fung have won the HKU Faculty of Dentistry Knowledge Exchange (KE) Award 2011, for their community KE project "Promoting oral health of Hong Kong preschool children through educating their parents and kindergarten teachers". HKU introduced Faculty KE Awards this year to recognise faculty-level outstanding KE accomplishments that have made demonstrable economic, social, or
cultural impacts to benefit the community, business/industry, or partner organisations.

Dr Andy Choi (Endeavour Australia Cheung Kong Postdoctoral Fellow and Honorary Assistant Professor in Dental Materials Science), Professor Jukka Matinlinna (Associate Professor in Dental Materials Science), and Professor Besim Ben-Nissan (University of Technology, Sydney), won third prize for their poster presentation titled "Titanium dental implant versus zirconia dental implant: a three-dimensional finite element study" at the 2nd Hong Kong International Dental Expo and Symposium (HKIDEAS) on 3 June 2011.

Professor Li-jian Jin (Professor in Periodontology) was conferred the title of Modern Dental Laboratory Professor in Clinical Dental Science at the HKU Fifth Inauguration Ceremony of Endowed Professorships on 12 April 2011.

Dr Chun-hung Chu (Associate Professor in Family Dentistry) has been awarded an "Extra Teeth Loving Day Action Grant" of HKD 60,000 by The Wrigley Co (HK) Ltd to promote oral health among primary school children in Hong Kong.

Professor Li-jian Jin (Professor in Periodontology) has received the Professional Exchange & Collaboration Award 2010 from the Chinese Stomatological Association in recognition of outstanding service to the dental community in Hong Kong and mainland China.

Professor Edward CM Lo (Professor in Dental Public Health) has been awarded The Best Original Article Award 2009 by the Hong Kong Dental Journal and the Hong Kong Dental Association for the research article: Lo ECM, Loo EKY, Lee CK.   • Dr Si-su Mo (PhD student) was awarded the Listerine Award in Investigative Periodontology for his poster titled “Subgingival spirochete diversity among healthy and chronic periodontitis subjects”, co-authored with Dr Meng You, Professor W Keung Leung, and Dr Rory Watt.

Dr Hannah DP Chua (Postdoctoral Fellow in Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery) won the Outstanding Research Postgraduate Student Award 2009-2009 at the HKU Graduate School Awards Presentation Ceremony on 14 December 2010.

Professor Lim K Cheung (Chair Professor of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery), Dr Philip KM Lee (Honorary Clinical Associate Professor in Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery), and Dr Ka-chun Yeung (Part-time Clinical Lecturer) each won Distinguished Service Awards from the HKU Faculty of Dentistry at the Graduation and Awards Ceremony on 7 December 2010

Dr Hannah DP Chua (Postdoctoral Fellow in Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery) and Dr Wen-biao Zhang (former PhD student) each won an Outstanding Thesis Award (2008-2009) from the HKU Faculty of Dentistry at the Graduation and Awards Ceremony on 7 December 2010. Dr Chua’s PhD thesis was titled “Distraction osteogenesis versus orthognathic surgery—which is better for cleft lip and palate patients?”; her supervisors were Professor Lim K Cheung, Professor Nabil Samman, and Drs M Bendeus, T Whitehill, and SMY Ho. Dr Zhang’s thesis was titled “Biochemical modulation and stem cell therapy for irradiated mandible”; his supervisors were Professor Lim K Cheung and Drs DTT Chua and LW Zheng.

Professor W Keung Leung (Professor in Periodontology) was elected President of the South-East Asia Association for Dental Education (2010-2012) and Dr Chun-hung Chu (Associate Professor in Family Dentistry) was elected Honorary Secretary of the South-East Asia Association for Dental Education (2010-2012) at the 21st meeting of the South-East Asia Association for Dental Education, which was held in Taipei, Taiwan, on 19-21 September 2010.

Professor Lim K Cheung (Chair Professor of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery), as principal investigator, has been awarded an SK Yee Medical Foundation Grant for HKD 890,680 to conduct a project titled "Distraction osteogenesis for mandibular advancement—a permanent cure for patients with obstructive sleep apnoea syndrome". The project co-investigators are Dr SC Fung, Dr MY Ho, and Dr HD Chua.

Professor Edward CM Lo (Professor in Dental Public Health) and Dr Susan Bridges (Assistant Professor in Dental Education and E-Learning) as Project Co-ordinators have each been awarded HKU Impact Project knowledge-exchange grants from the HKU Knowledge Exchange Fund 2010/2011.

Dr Cynthia KY Yiu (Associate Professor in Paediatric Dentistry) has been awarded the 2009 Outstanding Teacher Award by the HKU Faculty of Dentistry.

Dr Chun-hung Chu
(Associate Professor in Family Dentistry), as principal investigator (Hong Kong), and Professor Edward CM Lo (Professor in Dental Public Health), as co-investigator (Hong Kong), have been awarded a grant from the
National Natural Science Foundation of China and Hong Kong Research Grants Council Joint Research Scheme for HKD 854,450 to conduct a 3-year project titled "Enamel microstructure regeneration in macroscale by a molecular mimetic method". The principal investigator (Mainland China) is Dr Quan-li Li (Associate Professor at the College of Stomatology and Key Laboratory of Stomatology of Anhui Province, Anhui Medical Unversity, China).

Dr Jukka Matinlinna (Associate Professor in Dental Materials Science) was granted by evaluation the title Docent (in German, Privat Dozent; equivalent to Adjunct Professor) in Biomaterials Science by the Chancellor of the University of Helsinki, Finland, in October 2010. He also achieved Membership of the Royal Society of Chemistry, by evaluation, in October 2010.

24th Annual Scientific Meeting of the IADR South East Asia Division, Taipei, Taiwan, 20-21 September 2010:

  • Mr Jack C Ji (BDS IV student) won First Prize in the junior category of the IADR/Unilever Hatton Divisional Award for his presentation titled “Nonsurgical periodontal treatment favorably modulates plaque biofilm and host response”, which was co-authored by Dr KY Lo, Dr CJ Seneviratne, Dr X Li, and supervisors Professor Lakshman Samaranayake and Prof Li-jian Jin.
  • Miss Annie CY Kwok (BDS III student) won Second Prize in the junior category of the IADR/Unilever Hatton Divisional Award for her presentation titled “Silver and fluoride ions in remineralization of enamel and dentine”, which was co-authored by Miss Carol Li, Dr QH Zhi, and supervisor Professor Edward CM Lo.

21st Annual Scientific Meeting of the South East Asia Association for Dental Education (SEAADE), Taipei, Taiwan, 19-21 September 2010:

  • Dr Takao Watomoto (former honorary research assistant) won the IADR Arthur R Frechette Award (Prosthetic Group), for his 1-year postdoctoral research project on virulent attributes of Candida infection, which was supervised by Professor LP Samaranayake and Dr CJ Seneviratne in the Discipline of Oral Biosciences.
  • Ms TDK Herath (PhD student) won the IADR/Lion Young Investigator Dental Research Award for a presentation titled “Porphyromonas gingivalis LPS modulates immuno-inflammatory response in human gingival fibroblasts”, which was based on collaborative work with Professor RP Darveau (USA), Dr CJ Seneviratne (HKU), Dr Q Lu, and Professor CY Wang (USA). Dr Wen-you Zhou

Professor Niklaus Lang (Professor in Implant Dentistry) has received Honorary Membership of the Danish Society for the Study of Periodontology, founded in 1953, in "recognition of his unique and life-long engagement for Periodontology on a global plan".

Dr Chun-hung Chu
(Associate Professor in Comprehensive Dental Care), as principal investigator, has been awarded an SK Yee Medical Foundation Grant for HKD 1,248,016 to conduct a 2-year project titled "Outreach dental care service to control tooth decay in disadvantaged kindergarten children". The project co-investigators are Professor Edward Lo (Professor in Dental Public Health) and Ms CW Ng (Health Service Clinic In-Charge, Hong Kong Christian Service).

Dr Chun-hung Chu (Associate Professor in Comprehensive Dental Care) and Professor Edward Lo (Professor in Dental Public Health) have been awarded a "Bright Smiles, Bright Future" Dental Health Education Grant of HKD 220,000 from Colgate, to train kindergarten teachers in Hong Kong for 2 years to deliver oral health education.

Professor Lim K Cheung (Chair Professor of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery), Professor W Keung Leung (Professor in Periodontology), Dr Jukka Matinlinna (Associate Professor in Dental Materials Science), Dr Cynthia Yiu (Associate Professor in Paediatric Dentistry), and Dr Cheng-fei Zhang (Clinical Associate Professor in Endodontics) won General Research Fund 2010-2011 awards from the Hong Kong Research Grants Council in June 2010.

Professor Lim K Cheung (Chair Professor of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery) was awarded a Long Service Award on 1 June 2010 by The University of Hong Kong for 25 years of service at the HKU Faculty of Dentistry.

Dr Michael Y Chen (MPhil student in Orthodontics) won the Second Prize in the e-Poster Competition of the Indian Orthodontic Society Mid-Year Convention 2010: Beyond Boundaries, held in Hong Kong and Macau from 10 to 16 April 2010. The poster was based on the project “Antimicrobial activity of prunes extract on Streptococcus mutans”, which was supervised by Dr Ricky Wong and co-supervised by Professor Urban Hägg, Dr CJ Seneviratne, Professor Lakshman Samaranayake, and Professor Colman McGrath.

Dr Jukka Matinlinna (Associate Professor in Dental Materials Science) has been appointed as an Editorial Advisory Board Member of the journal Silicon (journal website: www.springer.com/chemistry/inorganic+chemistry/journal/12633; ISSN 1876-990X [print], ISSN 1876-9918 [electronic]).

Dr Ying-ying Tan (Master of Orthodontics student) won the Houston Poster Award, regarded as a major international research award in the orthodontics field, at the 86th Congress of the European Orthodontic Society, held in Portoroz, Slovenia, from 15 to 19 June 2010. Dr Tan's poster was titled "Effects of vascular endothelial growth factor (VEGF) on osteoblastic cells in vitro"; the project on which it was based was supervised by Dr Yan-qi Yang, Dr Ricky Wong, and Professor Bakr Rabie.

Dr Ricky Wong (Associate Professor in Orthodontics) achieved Membership of the Society for Biomaterials, by evaluation, in February 2010.

Dr Ricky Wong (Associate Professor in Orthodontics) has been appointed as an Editorial Board Member of the Asian Pacific Orthodontic Society.

Professor Lakshman Samaranayake
(Dean and Chair Professor of Oral Microbiology) has been selected as the winner of a 2010 Distinguished Scientist Award for Oral Medicine and Pathology Research by the International Association for Dental Research (IADR). The highly coveted prize will be presented at the Opening Ceremonies of the 88th General Session and Exhibition of the IADR, which will be held on 14 July 2010 in Barcelona, Spain.

Professor Lakshman Samaranayake (Dean and Chair Professor of Oral Microbiology) has been appointed as the holder of the HKU Faculty of Dentistry's inaugural endowed professorship: the Tam Wah Ching Professorship in Dental Science, established by philanthropist Dr Wah-ching Tam. The conferment ceremony will be held on 13 April 2010.

Professor Colman McGrath (Professor in Dental Public Health) has been awarded the 2008 Outstanding Teacher Award by the HKU Faculty of Dentistry.

Professor Lakshman Samaranayake (Dean and Chair Professor of Oral Microbiology) was awarded the 2009 HKU Research Output Prize for the research article "Candida albicans biofilm formation is associated with increased anti-oxidative capacities", published in the peer-reviewed journal Proteomics. Recognition and awards received in 2009

Dr Mei Lei (PhD student in Oral Biosciences) was awarded the prize for "GSK Best Poster Presentation" at the HKU Faculty of Dentistry and Peking University School of Stomatology Conjoint Scientific Session, Hong Kong, in November 2009, for the poster presentation titled "Action of silver diamine fluoride upon multi-species cariogenic biofilm on dentin", co-authored with Dr CJ Seneviratne and supervisors Dr Chun-hung Chu and Professor Edward CM Lo.

Dr MG Botelho (Associate Professor in Oral Rehabilitation) has been awarded an HKU Teaching Development Grant for HK$155,513 to support a 12-month project titled "Journal-based learning, continuing on from PBL: a pilot study".

Dr CJ Seneviratne (Postdoctoral Fellow in Oral Biosciences) was awarded the HKU Outstanding Research Postgraduate Student Award (2007-2008) on 26 November 2009 at the HKU Graduate School Award Presentation Ceremony.

Dr Chen Kun (PhD student) was awarded the prize for "GSK Best Oral and Poster Presentation" at the HKU Faculty of Dentistry and Peking University School of Stomatology Conjoint Scientific Session, Hong Kong, in November 2009 for the oral presentation titled "LEPR is a predisposing factor of mandibular retrognathism: an SNP association and animal study" co-authored with his supervisors Dr Ricky WK Wong and Prof Bakr Rabie.

Dr Kyoko Hibino (Master of Orthodontics student) was awarded full marks and the Gold Medal for best performance in the MOrth RCS(Edin) examination held in Hong Kong in November 2009. Not only was she the first student from Hong Kong to get full marks, but also the first student in the history of the Royal College of Surgeons in Edinburgh to do so.

Ms Connie Ling (BDS V student), representing her BDS group, won the Silver Prize in the Project-based Category of the 2009 South-East Asia Association for Dental Education (SEAADE)-GC Dental Asia Student Prevention Table Clinician Programme at the 20th SEAADE Annual Scientific Meeting on 23-24 November 2009, Chiang Mai, Thailand. The presentation was based on the 2009 BDS IV Community Health Project titled "Oral health education for Parkinson's disease patients", supervised by Professor Colman McGrath and Dr May Wong.

A research article in the Hong Kong Dental Journal written by HKU Faculty of Dentistry staff and students has won the journal's Best Original Article Award 2008. The article was based on the 2008 BDS IV Community Health Project titled "Health care vouchers for the elderly and utilization of dental services", supervised by Dr May Wong. Dr Ke Jin (PhD student), representing the Biomedical and Tissue Engineering Research Group of the HKU Faculty of Dentistry, won the Poster Award and Travel Award at the 3rd Hiroshima Conference on Education and Science in Dentistry, 7-8 November 2009, for his presentation titled "BMP2 gene transfer through rAAV2 enhances osteogenic activity of BMSCs", co-authored with Dr Li-wu Zheng and Professor Lim K Cheung (supervisors).

Dr Rennan Y Du (Advanced Diploma student in Paediatric Dentistry) was awarded the prize for "Best Poster Presentation" at the HKU Faculty of Dentistry and Peking University School of Stomatology Conjoint Scientific Session, Hong Kong, in November 2009, for the poster presentation titled "Health-related and oral health-related quality of life among preschool children with cerebral palsy", co-authored with Professor Colman McGrath, Dr Cynthia KY Yiu, and Professor Nigel King.

Professor Lakshman Samaranayake (Dean of the HKU Faculty of Dentistry and Chair Professor of Oral Microbiology) has been appointed the Editor-in-Chief of the Journal of Investigative and Clinical Dentistry, a new international journal "dedicated to the rapid dissemination of cutting-edge research findings in all aspects of oral and maxillofacial sciences", published by Wiley-Blackwell (website and online manuscript submissions: www.jicd.org).

Two students from the HKU Faculty of Dentistry won research awards at the 23rd Annual Scientific Meeting of the International Association for Dental Research (IADR) - South East Asia Division, held on 22-24 September 2009 in Wuhan, China, in conjunction with the 2nd Meeting of the IADR Pan Asian Pacific Federation and the 1st Meeting of the IADR Asia/Pacific Region:

Dr Mei Lei (PhD student in Oral Biosciences) received the IADR / Unilever Hatton Travel Award (Senior Category, South East Asia Division), for her research project "Effects of silver diamine fluoride on caries-like lesions and cariogenic biofilms". Her co-investigators were Dr Jayampath Seneviratne and Dr Chun-hung Chu (supervisor) and Prof Edward CM Lo (supervisor).

Mr Chung-yin Leung (BDS student) was runner-up in the IADR / Unilever Hatton Travel Award (Junior Category, South East Asia Division), for his project "Efficacy of clinical biocides on bacteria and fungi". His co-investigators were Mr YC Chan, Dr Jayampath Seneviratne (supervisor), and Prof Lakshman Samaranayake (supervisor).

Dr Jukka Matinlinna (Associate Professor in Dental Materials Science) was appointed as Docent (Adjunct Professor) in Biomaterials Chemistry by the Department of Chemistry at The University of Turku, Finland, in September 2009.

Professor Lim K Cheung (Chair Professor of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery) and Dr Hannah DP Chua (Postdoctoral Fellow in Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery) received a Top 10 Cited Paper (2006-2008) Award in September 2009 from the publisher Elsevier for their article "A meta-analysis of cleft maxillary osteotomy and distraction osteogenesis", International Journal of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery, 2006;35:14-24.

Dr Xiao-li Gao (Postdoctoral Fellow in Dental Public Health) was awarded a grant for ~HK$330K from the Health and Health Services Research Fund in August 2009 by the HKSAR Food and Health Bureau Research Council, for the project "Validation of caries risk assessment programmes in Hong Kong children". Her co-investigators are Professor Edward Lo (Professor in Dental Public Health), Dr CH Chu (Associate Professor in Comprehensive Dental Care), and Dr Stephen Hsu (Associate Professor, Faculty of Dentistry, National University of Singapore).

Mr MF Cheung (Tutor in Oral Radiology) was awarded a Long Service Award on 23 June 2009 by The University of Hong Kong for 25 years of service at the Faculty.

Dr Jukka Matinlinna (Associate Professor in Dental Materials Science) guest-edited with Dr KL Mittal a special issue of the Journal of Adhesion Science and Technology on the theme of "Adhesion aspects in dentistry". Professor Lim K Cheung (Chair Professor of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery) and Dr Hannah DP Chua (Postdoctoral Fellow in Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery) received an Outstanding Oral Presentation Award at the 19th International Conference on Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery, Shanghai, China, on 24-27 May 2009, for their presentation titled "Cleft maxillary distraction versus orthognathic surgery: which one is more stable in the long term?"

The following representatives of the HKU Faculty of Dentistry won four research prizes at the 87th General Session and Exhibition of the International Association for Dental Research (IADR), held in Miami, Florida, USA, from 1 to 4 April 2009:

  • Dr Mahendra Perera (PhD student) won two awards: the 2009 IADR / Lion Dental Research Award, for the most outstanding and innovative research in Microbiology/Immunology, and the IADR/Colgate Research in Prevention Travel Award. His presentation, "Highly active antiretroviral therapy influences oral chemokine and cytokine profiles", was based on his current PhD research, supervised by Dr Peter Tsang, Professor Anne McMillan, and Professor Lakshman Samaranayake.

  • Dr Jayampath Seneviratne (Postdoctoral Fellow) won the 2009 IADR / Unilever Hatton Divisional Award (senior category), South East Asia division, for a presentation titled "Systems biology tools reveal antifungal mechanism/s of Candida glabrata biofilm", which was based on his PhD research, supervised by Professor Lakshman Samaranayake and Professor Li-jian Jin.

  • Mr Tommy Fung and Mr Kevin Chan (BDS V students) won the 2009 IADR / Unilever Hatton Divisional Award (junior category), South East Asia division, for a presentation titled "Oral health disparities among low-income families in Hong Kong". Their findings came from their BDS Community Health Project, which was supervised by Professor Colman McGrath.

Dr Lei Chai (PhD 2008), together with Dr You-qiang Song, Dr Kwan-yat Zee, and Dr W Keung Leung, won the Best Poster Award at the Hong Kong Society for Immunology Annual Scientific Meeting on 18 April 2009, with a poster titled "Single nucleotide polymorphisms of complement component 5 and periodontitis".

Dr Susan Bridges (Assistant Professor in Dental Education and E-Learning) has been named runner-up for the International Award for Excellence in the World Universities field by the Journal of the World Universities Forum, for a paper titled "Global academic movement: wandering scholars or tradable commodities?", co-authored with Dr Brendan Bartlett.

Dr Susan Bridges (Assistant Professor in Dental Education and E-Learning) has been awarded an HKU Teaching Development Grant for HK$518,675 to support a project titled "Blended learning and interactive pedagogies: supporting problem-based learning in dental education". Her co-investigators are Dr John Dyson, Dr Peter CS Tsang, Prof Colman McGrath, Dr Cynthia KY Yiu, Dr Kevin HK Yip, and Dr Michael Botelho (2008 Chairpersons of the BDS Problem Development Groups).

Professor Nigel M King (Professor in Paediatric Dentistry), together with Professor Anut Itthagarun (formerly Associate Professor in Paediatric Dentistry) and Dr Naveen Kumar (formerly postgraduate student) have been selected as winners of an Award of Excellence in the Scientific Article Category by the Australian Dental Journal, for the most outstanding scientific paper published in the journal during 2008. (Kumar VL, Itthagarun A, King NM. The effect of casein phosphopeptide-amorphous calcium phosphate on remineralization of artificial caries-like lesions: an in vitro study. Aust Dent J 2008;53:34-40) Professor King has recently been elected as the President of the Australasian Academy of Paediatric Dentistry.

Professor Lim-kwong Cheung (Chair Professor of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery) and Dr Li-wu Zheng (Postdoctoral Fellow in Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery) have won the Best Original Article Award 2007, Hong Kong Dental Journal (HKDJ) and will be presented with the prize at an awards ceremony on 8 February 2009. Their paper, titled "Effect of recombinant human bone morphogenetic protein-2 on mandibular distraction osteogenesis", was published in Volume 4, No. 2. of the HKDJ.

Dr Jukka Matinlinna (Associate Professor in Dental Materials Science) has been appointed as a member of the Editorial Board of the Journal of Adhesion Science and Technology (JAST), starting from 1 January 2009 (journal website: http://www.brill.nl/jast).

Dr Lei Mei (PhD student) won the Best Poster Presentation Award at the 31st Asia-Pacific Dental Congress, Hong Kong, 7-11 May 2009, for a poster titled "Interaction of multi-species cariogenic biofilm on artificial dentin caries lesion", co-authored with Dr HK Yip, Dr CJ Seneviratne, Dr CH Chu (primary supervisor), and Professor ECM Lo (co-supervisor).

Dr Chun-hung Chu (Associate Professor in Comprehensive Dental Care) won the Best Oral Presentation Award at the 31st Asia-Pacific Dental Congress, Hong Kong, 7-11 May 2009, for a presentation titled "Occlusion and orthodontic treatment demand amongst young Chinese adults in Hong Kong", co-authored with Dr HB Choy and Professor ECM Lo.

Recognition and awards received in 2008

Dr Mike YY Leung (Advanced Diploma student in Oral & Maxillofacial Surgery) won the Gold Medal for the Best Original Research by Trainees at a recent conference held by the Hong Kong Academy of Medicine. His presentation was based on research done during his Master of Dental Surgery degree, under the supervision of Professor Lim K Cheung.

Ms Polly PL Fung (BDS V student) received a 5th National Youth Science and Technology Award on 5 December 2008 in the Great Hall of the People, Beijing, in recognition of her academic record and a research project titled "Detection of tooth demineralization by two recent advanced technologies", performed under the supervision of Professor Edward Lo and Dr Thomas Li.

Dr Kevin Yip has received an Applied Research Grant in Discovery from Johnson and Johnson, USA, to support his research project "Microbiota in saliva and dental plaque from healthy and coronary artery disease patients". The US$31,820 applied research grant will be shared with research collaborators in Hong Kong, mainland China, and Singapore, with Dr Duncan Yu from Johnson and Johnson acting as the team coordinator in Singapore.

Dr Winnie Choi Wing Shan (Advanced Diploma student in Oral & Maxillofacial Surgery) was awarded an Oral Abstract Scientific Presentation Award at the 90th Annual Meeting, Scientific Sessions and Exhibition of the American Association of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgeons, held in Seattle, USA, on 16-20 September 2008 in conjunction with the Chinese Society of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgeons. Her abstract was titled "The effect of tranexamic acid on blood loss during orthognathic surgery: a randomized controlled trial". Her co-authors were Professor Nabil Samman, Professor in Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery at the HKU Faculty of Dentistry and Dr Michael G Irwin, Head of the Department of Anaesthesiology at the HKU Li Ka Shing Faculty of Medicine.

Dr Andrew Ow (PhD student) was awarded an Outstanding Poster Presentation Award at the 90th Annual Meeting, Scientific Sessions and Exhibition of the American Association of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgeons, held in Seattle, USA, on 16-20 September 2008 in conjunction with the Chinese Society of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgeons. His presentation, titled "Bilateral sagittal split osteotomies versus mandibular distraction osteogenesis: which is better?" was co-authored by Professor Lim K Cheung, Chair Professor of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery.

Professor Edward Lo (Professor in Dental Public Health) was awarded a grant of HK$1.33 million by the SK Yee Medical Foundation in October 2008, to provide a community dental service for various disadvantaged groups in Hong Kong. The other project members are Dr John Dyson (Associate Professor in Oral Rehabilitation) and Dr Chun-hung Chu (Associate Professor in Family Dentistry).

Dr Chun-hung Chu (Associate Professor in Family Dentistry) received a HK$300,000 grant from the HKSAR Health Care and Promotion Fund under the Seed Funding Scheme in October 2008, to run an outreach programme providing preventive dental care services to kindergarten children. The other project member is Professor Edward Lo (Professor in Dental Public Health).

The following staff members were elected to various posts in the International Association for Dental Research (IADR) in July 2008:

Professor Lakshman Samaranayake, Chair, IADR Awards Review Committee, and President, Oral Medicine and Pathology Scientific Group; Professor Anne McMillan, Member, IADR Constitution Committee; Professor Colman McGrath, Councilor, Behavioral, Epidemiologic and Health Services Research Scientific Group. In addition, Professor Li-jian Jin was recently appointed as Councilor, IADR South-East Asia Division.

Mr Bernard Liang (BDS Group 5.5) was the first runner-up (2nd place) in the Dentsply Student Table Clinician Competition at the 19th Annual Meeting of the South-East Asia Association for Dental Education, held in October 2008 in Manila, Philippines.

Dr Li-wu Zheng, Postdoctoral Fellow in Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery, has been awarded CHF114,200 (about HK$835,000) by the AO Research Fund of the AO Foundation (Switzerland) to conduct the research project "Shall We Rewrite the Distraction Protocol for Continuous Distraction Osteogenesis?" His co-researcher is Professor Lim-kwong Cheung, Chair Professor in Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery.

Professor Lim-kwong Cheung, Chair Professor in Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery, has been appointed to the Editorial Board of the International Journal of Dentistry, a new peer-reviewed open access journal (website, <www.hindawi.com/journals/ijd>).

Dr Kevin HK Yip (Associate Professor in Family Dentistry) has been presented with a 2008 Listerine Research Award by Johnson and Johnson to conduct a research project titled 'The role of cariogenic bacteria of oral biofilm in coronary heart disease' Co-holders of this US$31,820 award are co-researchers Professor Herbert HP Fang, Department of Civil Engineering, HKU Faculty of Engineering; Professor Hui Chen, Department of Conservative Dentistry and Periodontics, School of Stomatology, Zhejiang University; and Professor Jianhua Zhu, Department of Internal Cardiology, Zhejiang University.

Mr Sam Hui (staff of Dental Media Unit) has been awarded the "Gerry Fowler Prize for Excellence" by Middlesex University, for achieving distinction for his part-time Master of Art degree on "Work Based Learning Studies (Multimedia Design and Project Management)". His supervisors for his research project on e-learning for continuing dental education were Mr Raymond Fok (Senior Lecturer and Programme Leader, Middlesex University) and Professor Lim K Cheung (Professor in Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery).

Professor Lim-kwong Cheung (Professor in Oral & Maxillofacial Surgery), Dr Rory Watt (Assistant Professor in Oral Biosciences), Dr Kevin Yip (Associate Professor in Family Dentistry) and Dr Katherine Leung (Assistant Professor in Oral Rehabilitation) won GRF 2008-2009 awards from the Hong Kong Research Grants Council in July 2008.

Dr Jayampath Seneviratne (2006 PhD student) was awarded "IADR/Colgate Research in Prevention Travel Award" at the International Association for Dental Research Scientific Meeting, Toronto, Canada, July 2008. His supervisor is Professor L.P. Samaranayake.

Professor Urban Hägg, (Chair Professor in Orthodontics), and co-investigators Dr Ricky Wong (Associate Professor in Orthodontics), Professor Lakshman Samaranayake (Dean and Chair Professor in Microbiology), Dr Richard Kao (Assistant Professor in Microbiology, Li Ka Shing Faculty of Medicine), and Dr Michelle Yuen (Master of Orthodontics student) are recipients of one of the "2008 IADR/GSK Innovation in Oral Care Award" (US$75,000) for the research on "A Natural Edible Agent for Reduction of Oral Biofilm" which recognizes innovative technologies that can be used routinely by the public to maintain and improve oral health and quality of life. The award was presented at the International Association of Dental Research Scientific Meeting, Toronto, Canada in July 2008.

Dr May CM Wong (Associate Professor in Dental Public Health) has been appointed as an Associate Editor of the journal Community Dentistry and Oral Epidemiology.

Professor Edward CM Lo (Professor in Dental Public Health) has been appointed to the Editorial Board of the Journal of Dental Research, the official journal of the International Association for Dental Research.

Professor Lim-kwong Cheung and Dr Qian-feng Li won Outstanding Oral Presentation Awards at The University of Hong Kong and Wuhan University Inaugural Conjoint Dental Scientific Meeting, 10-11 May 2008, Dongguan, China.

Dr Chun-hung Chu and Dr Qian Lu won Outstanding Poster Presentation Awards at The University of Hong Kong and Wuhan University Inaugural Conjoint Dental Scientific Meeting, 10-11 May 2008, Dongguan, China.

Professor Tak-wah Chow (Professor in Family Dentistry) and Mr Raymond TC Leung (Audiovisual Officer) were honoured by The University of Hong Kong for 25 and 35 years of service, respectively, at the HKU Long Service Awards Ceremony on 6 May 2008.

Professor Urban Hägg (Chair Professor of Orthodontics) was elected as Vice President of the Asian-Pacific Orthodontic Society at the 6th Asian-Pacific Orthodontic Conference held in Bangkok, Tahiland, in March 2008.

Dr Ricky Wong (Associate Professor in Orthodontics) has been awarded the Faculty Research Output Prize 2008 in recognition of research excellence in the form of an article co-authored with Professor Bakr Rabie (Professor in Orthodontics) titled "Effect of puerarin on bone formation", which was published in the journal Osteoarthritis and Cartilage in 2007.

Professor Urban Hägg, Chair in Orthodontics, has successfully completed the admission requirements, and been admitted at a regular member of Edward H Angle Society of Orthodontists (USA) in March 2008.

Dr Ricky Wong, Associate Professor in Orthodontics, has been appointed to the Editorial Board of the International Journal of Biomedical Engineering and Consumer Health Informatics.
